I really enjoy drawing on my iPad as it feels very natural. Watch the video below as it shows the process from start to finish.
I started with the drawing with pencils. Then, I started blocking in shapes. I normally start by painting the areas in shadow, but in this case I started with areas not in shadows since I was using a colored grayish paper and it made more sense to me to start that way for more contrast. Then I continue with the rest of the areas and detail.

In this video I show you step by step my process when painting a portrait and give detail explanation about why I am doing what I am doing in a certain way. I believe this will help any new artist who is just getting familiar with portraiture.
Gouache is a wonderful medium to use in your learning process as it will prepare you when painting portraits with oils. Gouache is very similar to oils in the way you do the application of paint as I am showing you here.

]]>The Acryl gouache are very similar to acrylics in that they dry permanent. At the same time, being gouache, they behave as any other artist quality gouache. You actually have like a 15 minute window that you can still re-activate the paint, even when applying layer on top of other layers. But after the 15 min., they become permanent.

]]>The Geneva oils come in limited palette. For this painting I used Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow, Pyrrole Red, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, and Black.
These oils remain wet for a long time as it already comes with clove oils, which extends drying time. You don't need to use any other medium as they flow very smoothly. They are not made for impasto applications. These oils are self-leveling but you can still show your brushwork really nice.

My customer sent me 4 separate photos since there were not photos of her family in which they were together. You can see the original photos on my video.
I played with the pictures to position them in a way that it looked like the photograph was taken in a single sitting for the whole family.
Here is the final sketch I did on canvas before starting to paint.
After the sketch was finished, I applied acrylic glazing medium to protect the sketch and prevent it from smearing or mixing the graphite and charcoal with the paints.
Since each reference picture were taken at different time, and probably by different photographers; each photo had different light sources. In some, the light source was coming from the top right, and other from top left. This means that some pictures have the shadows on one side and the other from the opposite direction.
But that wasn't the only challenge! They were not looking at the same direction. Specially the mother; she was looking way to her right as if she was distracted when shortly before the photographer took the picture. So I had to straighten or move her eyes a little to make her look like she was actually looking towards the front while still looking natural.
Now it was time to start the actual painting!
I started applying the first layers of paint with acrylics. This helped me speed up the time spent painting since acrylics dry almost immediately. Once I finished with the acrylics, I proceeded to paint the portrait with oil paints.
For this particular painting, it took about three (3) to (4) layers of oil paint. I had to let each layer dry before continuing with the next layer. The areas of the portrait that took four layers were the faces. For the clothing, I did about two layer; applying some impasto techniques on the girl, since she was the star of the painting (she was actually my client!).
The entire process took about a month or two to complete since I had to wait for the painting to dry between layers. This is the only 'disadvantage' of using oils for this kind of painting. It take much longer than with acrylics. But there is nothing comparable to the look and feel of oil paints!
Her is the final product!
I am currently taking commissions for portraits (people and/or pets). For more information, visit these pages:

]]>For this painting, I was aiming for an Impressionist style or 'look, similar to Paul Cézanne's paintings, Marie Bracquemond, Eliseu Visconti with his work Circle of Children from 1918; but more like Vincent Van Gogh with his impasto paintings.
You can see some of the detail and impasto work I used to create this impressionist or expressionist painting; whichever you want to call it. Both are kind of synonyms of 'loose brushwork and thick paint' in the art world.

I had mostly painted portraits, both people and pets, but more recently I started painting more loosely, or impressionistic or expressionist style. When you paint commissioned portraits, you must be careful and methodic in order to achieve your subject's likeness; but when painting lose, all the constraints disappear and the whole process turns out to be a really liberating experience.
I invite you to visit my website frequently as I will be adding all sorts of different paintings in different styles and sizes at great prices!
Great way to start the new year 2019!
